Juliankxxx - Chorus in Rememory of Flight @ the Curve (Barbican) until 11 February 2024
This is the 3rd time I’ve been back to see Julianknxx’s show. It’s been enriching every time I step into the space and encounter the series of stunning films around the Curve. 🐅
.
These video pieces interweave dance, poetry, conversation, singing and music creating a truly mesmerising place to be in. But they also provide an opportunity for a deeper learning that is so important. ✨
.
“If you do not unlearn racism….you might miss the love of your life” was one of my favourite quotes in the final video piece - I think that’ll stay with me for a long time.❤️🔥
.
Pulled from the press release/details which puts it so well:
“Julianknxx has spent the past year travelling to European cities to collaborate with choirs, politicians, dancers, activists and others living among the Black and African diasporas. Through a practice of active listening, he has made space for them to share their personal testimonies, which have then been woven into this series of films.
These voices are bound together by a single refrain, ‘we are what’s left of us’, which speaks to the ways in which music can be a vital conduit for the survival of cultural memory.
Over the years he has developed an expansive artistic practice ranging from poetry and performance to sculpture and film, drawing on his personal experiences to broaden perspectives on the history and culture of Africa and its diasporas.” 🙌
.
It really is another beautiful show and such a powerful one that. Try and get yourself down there asap before it closes. 🥰
